The Icepick is available to download through the Titanfall Mods site. The Custom Gauntlets mod comes packaged with it.
Titanfall 2 Icepick
The Icepick is a mod injector for Titanfall 2 that allows players to inject custom scripts into the game, override existing scripts, and override any asset loaded into the engine with their own custom ones.
It also modifies some gameplay code and files so that players can load up multiplayer maps and explore them at their own leisure, and to allow the Source engine to load content from packages that aren’t normally loaded as part of the map.
The controls and UI for the Sandbox gamemode were inspired by Garry’s Mod’s sandbox to allow players to place props from any map into the one they were currently playing, and spawn in NPCs and entities to play with.
We decided to split it out as a separate thing from the Custom Gauntlets it was originally only going to inject, and expand on it so that others could use it as a platform for building their own mods on if they wanted. It was used as the basis for early versions of the Northstar client for Titanfall 2 that implements custom servers.
Custom Gauntlets Mod
A mod that allows players to create their own “gauntlet races” like the one found in the tutorial level of Titanfall 2. Players can place custom entities that allow for start and finish lines, targets that need to be shot, a leaderboard, and weapon pick ups. These races can then be saved and sent to other players to play with.
This was the mod I originally set out to make for Titanfall 2, with the Icepick being for purely injecting the code to make this mod run.
I put the trailer for this mod out and immediately hopped on a plane from Stockholm to Melbourne to go home for Christmas. When I got home I had a load of emails from Respawn asking for me to get in contact as they were interested in how I’d made it, fun!
